New Compost/Recycle Bin @ New Mohawk

Recycle BinNew Mohawk students learned woodworking techniques during this spring’s enrichment classes. Instructor and local woodworker Tim Brennan assisted students with measurements, the safe use of tools, and, with student aid, constructed the new compost/recycle bin. This bin is a great asset toward our school-wide sustainability commitment.

A Picture and A Mention in The Union

Some students also expressed their enjoyment of the ability to take classes they are interested in.

“We have an allowance with them and they pay for all my bass lessons,” said Josh McDonald, 13, who said he enjoyed the teachers and flexibility of Twin Ridges Home Study Charter.

“I like it a lot better than going to public school or private school,” McDonald said. “I can go at my own pace and learn more about stuff I’m interested in, instead of having to study what the class is studying.” -from “Students, parents weigh in on charter schools”

Recently, teacher Ms. Jen Sheffo entered a contest to win organic seeds for our school. TRHS was lucky enough to win this generous supply of seeds from Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply! These seeds will be a great addition to our efforts for a more sustainable school. Thank you to Peaceful Valley and to Ms. Sheffo!

News from the TRHS Environmental Science Club:

solar_iconThe TRHS Environmental Science Club is calling on Nevada City to divest from fossil fuels!

We are a group of students at Twin Ridges Home Study who are concerned about our climate.  We are especially concerned about the high levels of ground level ozone in our atmosphere.  The burning of fossil fuels is one of the main contributors to high ozone levels and a catalysts of climate change.  This risks the health of current and future generations.

We are afraid of losing our beautiful environment including our clean air and water.

We would like Nevada City to continue to be at the forefront of environmental action. We would like you to stop investing in fossil fuels from this point on, and divest from fossil fuels that you currently own within the next five years.  By divesting from fossil fuels we would begin to lead the nation in the fight against climate change.

We have created a petition. Please take a moment to sign it at: http://campaigns.gofossilfree.org/petitions/divest-nevada-city-from-fossil-fuels.

TRHS is committed to reducing our fossil fuel dependence. We are on our way with our grant to install solar panels at our Nevada City campus along with an energy audit and a change in habits. Join us!
