Family Guide

Family Guide

This guide will provide you with an overview of your independent study charter school.
Homeschooling… home-schooling…independent study…home education…personalized learning…home study…The decision to educate your child outside of the traditional, seat-based school setting may go by different names; however, no matter what you label your method of alternative education, understanding how Twin Ridges Home Study Charter School (TRHS) can assist you and your student on the educational journey will enable you to make great choices for the upcoming school year.
What is Home Study?

Each family’s story is unique. Some families turn to home education to maintain educational continuity while one or both parents serve in the military or frequently move for business. Some families wish to provide an environment free from peer pressures endemic in traditional schools. Some families turn to home education as a way to better support their child. Regardless of the reason, every family has made a significant commitment to providing a strong educational foundation and love of learning for their children.

The home study environment varies greatly and reflects each family’s and each student’s particular interests, needs, strengths, and learning style. In developing a schedule for your student, recognizing his or her learning style is a great place to start. Most students fall within a certain learning style or modality:

    Visual learners often
    • benefit from a quiet environment.

    • tend to learn more easily with illustrations that accompany content.

    • tend to have good organizational skills.

    Auditory learners often
    • benefit from reading aloud.

    • tend to verbalize concepts.

    • tend to enjoy music, talking, and listening.

    Kinesthetic learners often
    • benefit from physical movement.

    • tend to be more adventurous.

    • tend to be outgoing.

    Tactile learners often
    • benefit from manipulatives while learning a new concept.

    • tend to be more artistic.

    • tend to tolerate less organized space.

Of course most students incorporate different aspects of their senses. Exploring the subtleties of your child’s learning style will help you personalize his or her learning experience. TRHS’s credentialed teachers, who are part of the learning team, are adept at providing you with feedback and guidance.
The Learning Team
Student
The learning team is like an equilateral triangle with three vital components: student, parent, and teacher. Our teachers have a great deal of experience with a wide spectrum of curricula, learning styles, philosophies, and methods. Parents and students can consider the teachers as a partner in education.

Your teacher will meet with you and your student at the beginning of each semester and once at the end of each 20-day learning period. At these meetings, the teacher will discuss with you what work has been completed by the student, what he or she has been studying, and what you hope to accomplish in the next learning period. The teacher can also help to identify advancements or struggles the student may be experiencing. Additionally, the teacher will collect work samples as required by state law to keep on file.
