Trina Hunner

Nevada City Teacher

My love of art and of nature inspired me to study both art and environmental studies in college.  I received my B.A. environmental studies and a B.S. in art and design from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  After graduating I spent a year as an artist in residence for the Children’s Creative Project in Santa Barbara County.  Next I taught high school art  (drawing, painting and photography) for two years while I worked on my teaching credential.  In 2006 my husband Nikos and I left the Bay Area and moved to Nevada County to make our home.   We enjoy skiing, hiking and spending time with our dog Bentley and our cat Charlotte.  In March 2012, I released my first children’s book which I co-authored and illustrated called  “Molly’s Organic Farm”.

Jennifer Sheffo

Wheatland/Beale Teacher

I earned my B.A. in Liberal Studies and California Teaching Credential at Chico State in 1998 and completed my M.A. Ed. with Lesley University in 2003. I joined the Twin Ridges Home Study team in 2007 following six years of teaching elementary grades in the public school setting and taking time off to be home and raise my daughters. In 2011, I was honored as “The Teacher Who Makes a Difference” and in 2013 I was named the District Teacher of the Year. Being a home study teacher at TRHS is both rewarding and challenging with each new day. I am gratified and inspired by the families I have the pleasure of working with. In my free time I enjoy cooking, crafty endeavors, being active with my kids; which can involve tearing up the pickleball court, playing volleyball, snow skiing, boating on the lake or walking grandma’s pet poodle, Lucky. I live in Penn Valley with my husband Nick, daughters, Emma and Hannah and our cat, Summer.

Jessica

Jessica Fowler

Truckee Teacher

My love of the outdoors and education began in my childhood outside of Yosemite.  After graduating from Chico State with a Bachelor of Arts degree, emphasis in Geography, and a minor in Health Sciences, I moved to Oregon to work. My love of teaching blossomed, particularly teaching reading to struggling students.  I returned to Chico to earn my Professional Clear Multiple Subject Credential with CLAD in 2000 after which I taught in Butte and Mariposa Counties.  I had the pleasure of creating a reading remediation program at Mariposa Elementary with great results!

Combining my experiences of coordinating Parks and Recreation programs, teaching, tutoring, and educating the public about the natural history of Yosemite, I discovered that alternative education is where I wanted to be.

My favorites include:  teaching an integrated Math and Science class, researching personalized curriculum, collaborating with families, and planning field trips! I have been coordinating and teaching at the Truckee site since 2005.  I love to ski, hike, fish, and cook with my husband and two boys.

I grew up by the beach in Santa Barbara and decided to be a teacher when I was 14! I studied Art History & Environmental Studies at Williams College in Massachusetts and got my Masters in Elementary Education and my credential doing a one year apprenticeship at Shady Hill School and coursework at Lesley College in Cambridge, MA.  I was a classroom teacher for 16 years and have been an enrichment teacher for 20 years.  I have lived in Nevada County for 22 years with my husband Dave, also a teacher, and our sons, Casey (23) and Miles (20), and assorted pets.  I love to swim, dance, backpack and snowboard. I am the head fairy Godmother of the Cinderella Project and I like to say, I am professional, and I sparkle!!

Liz

Liz Grayson

Truckee Teacher

Over the past 9 years, I have worked at the UHC homeschool program and have broad knowledge and understanding for the efforts of families to pursue this sort of personalized education. Although I was not blessed with children of my own, my niece and my nephews were all homeschooled by their parents and are all high achievers in their own rights.

I was born in the Sacramento area but grew up in the South Bay Area and lived there until I moved to Grass Valley in 2000. I enjoy fixing up my home, playing with my kitty, spending time with friends and family and singing in church.

Joy Beresky

Nevada City Teacher

I grew up in the mountains of Idaho where I earned my degree in Kinesiology from Lewis Clark State College along with a minor in Health. I started my teaching career in small charter schools in Arizona, some focusing on gifted and talented, science and technology, Montessori and one year in the public school system. I loved working in the small community environments of the charter school system and am very glad to continue at Twin Ridges Home Study. I am passionate about teaching what children are interested in and focusing on individual learning styles while inspiring natural potential. I love gardening, sewing, camping, hiking and reading, and of course spending time with my two children Jasmine and Jasper.

Kelley Soper

Nevada City Teacher

I was born and raised in Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley, you know “the Valley.” I earned a Bachelor’s degree at UC-Santa Barbara in Sociology, and began teaching middle school in 1998. I have a multiple subject credential, as well as a single subject credential in Health and Computer Applications. I later earned a Masters in Education with a focus on curriculum and educational technology online with the University of Phoenix. Doing school online can be difficult as you need to stay organized and keep on top of your due dates, but it allowed me so much freedom as I moved away from Los Angeles and worked on my degree in Japan and later in Northern California. When my eldest son Levi was two, I knew I wanted to homeschool him and I’ve never looked back. I love being a homeschooling mom, and really like to help others find their path in the homeschooling world. In my spare time, I love to hang out with my boys, travel, take photos, read and sometimes play Minecraft.

Me

Colette Finkbiner

Business Tech/Media Tech

Colette grew up in the lush Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania on a small, family dairy farm. Life on the farm instilled a fierce sense of self-determination in her. Eventually, she and her husband, who is a native of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, moved to California. Their early experiences inevitably influenced their family’s do-it-yourself philosophy. Home study was a natural choice for their son’s education.

TRHS families and staff inspired and motivated Colette with friendship and mentoring. Although her son is now in college, she continues her involvement with the TRHS family. She is a freelance writer as well as TRHS tech team, web mistress, business tech, sticker lady and multi-tasker.
